Examining the Arctic: Iceland

Introduction

In the spring of 2017 I was selected to participate as a National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. The fellowship is organized by National Geographic and Lindblad expeditions. As part of the fellowship, K-12 educators from around the United States and Canada were selected to travel to some of the most remote places in the planet aboard one of Lindblad's expedition ships. Teachers worked on board with naturalists, photographers, expedition staff, and crew to design lessons based on their experience.

For the fellowship I was invited to circumnavigate Iceland aboard the National Geographic Explorer. This 10 day expedition began by exploring the Westman Islands and the Vatnajokull ice cap in the south, and then on to the fjords of the northeast. We crossed the Arctic Circle to observe marine animals, and the remote island of Grimsey, before heading ashore around the Lake Myvatn area. The expedition ended by traveling up around the western fjords before ended up back in Reykjavik.
