Incorporating GIS into Core Classes

Incorporating GIS into Core Classes

Picture
Educators familiar with GIS will find it is a helpful tool to create new interactive lessons.  As a growing field it is becoming increasingly helpful for students to learn how to use this technology. Exposing students to GIS in core classes will help them to learn the materials, but also to learn a useful skill. Even with the pre-packaged lessons it is necessary for teachers to have an understanding of how to use the technology. For almost all of the students GIS will be a completely new technology so the more the teacher knows about how to use the technology the more they will be able to help with the lesson.  One of the greatest challenges with GIS is de-mystifying the technology so providing some base instruction and practice with the technology is helpful in beginning the process of getting students familiar with GIS. The same thing goes for teachers, do not be afraid to try things out and try something new.
