Teaching Geography to English Language Learners (Ells)

With the changing Demographics of the United States the chances are very good that you will not have a culturally homogeneous classroom. Especially in urban schools around the country there are going to be a large number of students who do not speak English as their primary language. The complexities of Geography and the abstract ideas are sometimes hard enough for native English, much less for students trying to learn in a foreign language. One of the other issues is that words that have a different colloquial usage will have different meanings in Geography.
